New Scholarship Created at MCC in Memory of Fire Chief Roberson

April 16, 2025

A new scholarship has been established with the Martin Community College (MCC) Foundation. Tammy Roberson James of Robersonville, NC created a scholarship in memory of her late father, Mike Roberson.

The Fire Chief Mike Roberson Memorial Scholarship is available to eligible students enrolled in MCC's Fire Academy program. Students receiving this scholarship will be awarded $500 to help cover the cost of enrollment fees, books, materials, uniform, and other related costs. Two scholarships will be available each year. To be considered for this scholarship, candidates must be a resident of Martin County with the intention of remaining and working in Martin County. Recipients must also remain in good academic standing and demonstrate progression towards successful completion of the program.

James is proud of her father and his service to our community. Fire Chief Mike Roberson of Robersonville, NC lived his whole life in Robersonville serving his community. He began as a Police Officer while also volunteering with the Fire Department. In 1972, the Town of Robersonville hired him as their first-ever employed Fire Chief. Roberson served as Fire Chief until his retirement in 2006.

Fire Chief Roberson was also an instructor at local community colleges, including MCC, as well as with local fire departments. He was a trained arson investigator and hazmat team member. Fire Chief Roberson always stressed safety for firefighters as well as protection of person and property.

This scholarship has been established by Roberson's family in his memory and to honor his legacy of sharing his knowledge of fire service. With extraordinary pride, James states, "By honoring his memory in this way, this scholarship couldn't be more perfect because of the love he had for the brotherhood of fire service."

The MCC Foundation thanks Tammy James for her generosity to and thoughtfulness of MCC's students and our community. MCC's Vice President, Institutional Advancement, Kinsey Price, expresses her appreciation and says, "We are honored to be entrusted as the stewards of such a meaningful fund that will undoubtedly assist students in reaching their career goals in fire service. We thank Mrs. James for honoring her father in this way, and we are grateful to all the men and women out there who enter this noble profession."

MCC's next Fire Academy starts on May 5, 2025. For more information, contact Larry Johnson, Fire Training Director, at rj98923@martincc.edu or (252) 789-0205. To apply for the Fire Chief Mike Roberson Memorial Scholarship, visit Continuing Education Scholarships.
